Voters reject surtax reduction

Laclede County voters on Tuesday rejected a proposed decrease for the county’s surtax, according to unofficial results from the Laclede County Clerk's Office.

The issue received support from only about 39 percent of county voters and was opposed by 60 percent.

The unofficial vote tally was 4,467 in favor and 6,755 opposed.

If approved, the proposal would have cut the county surtax paid by commercial property owners from $1.03 per $100 assessed valuation to 51 cents per $100 assessed valuation.
Supporters said it would encourage economic growth.

Opponents said it would cut funding for for local governments services including schools, the library and health department.

A proposal to legalize recreational marijuana use was overwhelmingly rejected by Laclede County voters.

Amendment 3, which would legalize recreational marijuana in the state was opposed by 61 percent of Laclede County voters with 4,313 voting yes and 7,013 voting no.


Amendment 5 would create the Missouri Department of the National Guard as a new state agency, headed by an adjutant general appointed by and serving at the pleasure of the governor by and with the advice and consent of the senate. It was favored by 64 percent of Laclede County voters.

The Constitutional Convention question, if approved, would require the governor to call an election of delegates to serve at a convention for the purpose of revising or amending the Missouri Constitution. Any revisions or amendments will then be put to a vote of the people for their consideration.

This issue was opposed by 69 percent of Laclede County voters.
Amendment 1 would give the General Assembly statutory authority to invest state funds and also expand the state treasurer's investment options.  It was rejected in Laclede County with 4,322 voting yes and 6,709 voting no.

Amendment 4 would allow the general assembly by law to increase the minimum funding for a police force established by the state board of police commissioners to ensure such police force has additional resources to serve its communities. This issue was favored by Laclede County voters with 7,193 voting yes and 3,951 voting no.

County officeholders were elected unopposed. They are Presiding Commissioner Randy Angst, Circuit Clerk Heather Officer, County Clerk Linda Cansler, Recorder Jennifer Raef, Treasurer Kristy Carr, Prosecuting Attorney Amy Folsom and Public Administrator Annette Charles.
