If the sun had been shining on a day spent with his kids 10 years ago, David Smothers might not have found his life-changing hobby.
"My kids were bored one day, and it was a rainy day. I said, 'Let's go up and get some canvases and some paints and do some painting,' so I got a couple of sets of acrylic paints," Smothers said.
The experience whetted his appetite for art. He had experimented with another medium a few decades ago.
When he lived in Arizona from 1994 to 2000, he tried capturing desert sunsets with pastels, doing 10 or 15 drawings over a six-month period. That was the extent of his artwork until that rainy day in 2012.
