Rosemary (Wehking) Myers, better known as Sandy, of St. Charles, died Thursday, March 30, 2023, at the age of 80 after a brief battle with cancer.
Sandy was born on Jan. 5, 1943, to Henry and Rosemary (McCoole) Wehking in Cedar Rapids, lowa. After graduating from high school in Rock Island, Illinois, Sandy briefly attended Augustan College before transferring to and graduating from Valparaiso University.
Sandy’s Lutheran faith was central to her entire life. After graduating college, Sandy began an internship as a deaconess for the Lutheran Church Missouri Synod. She started her lifelong career of caring for adults and children with special needs while working as an intern at Winfield State Hospital in Lawrence, Kan. Sandy graduated from the Deaconess Training School at Valparaiso University in 1965, was consecrated into the Lutheran Diaconate, and served in that ministry in Ohio, Illinois and New York.
Sandy began her teaching career in the early 1970’s and spent decades working in public and private schools with children with special needs. She obtained her master’s degree in education from Southern Illinois University at Edwardsville in 1988. Sandy was a strong proponent of the value of education and its ability to change people’s lives.
Sandy married John Myers in 1967 and they went on to raise three children, John Myers Jr., Jaime (Myers) Skinner, and Joel Myers. Through their ministry at Olive Branch Lutheran Church in Okawville, Ill., and later at Trinity Lutheran Church in Lebanon, Missouri, the family became an integral part of their local communities.
Sandy was a passionate St. Louis Cardinals fan and felt blessed to see the entire playing career of her favorite player, Yadi Molina. She did, though, question how the Cardinals will fare without him and, like many Cardinals fans, the quality of the coaching staff. Sandi was always an active person, playing tennis in college and in softball leagues and even dominating ping-pong well into her 70’s. She was even more passionate about her children’s participation in sports. Sandy was a life-long animal lover and cared for hundreds of rescued pets over the years.
Sandy was predeceased by her parents, her brother Henry (Hank) Wehking and sister Patricia (Wehking) Geissinger. Sandy is survived by many loving family members including her three children and their spouses; John and Laura (Murphy) Myers, Jaime and Jack Skinner, and Joel and Julie Myers; as well as her nine grandchildren: Adam Myers, Meagan (Myers) West, Tyler Myers, Tristan Myers, Jordan Myers, Dylan Myers Price, Ollie Skinner, Nicholas Murphy, and Nathan Murphy; and two great-grandchildren, Landry West and Wright Murphy; and many nieces, nephews, and friends.
We will celebrate Sandy’s life on Monday, April 10, 2023, from 5-8 p.m. at Zion Lutheran Church in Maryland Heights. Services will be held at the church at 10 am on Tuesday, April 11.
