Preview: Local pantries anticipate impact of SNAP benefit suspension

Many locals will likely feel the impact of the federal shutdown through their inability to receive SNAP (Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program) benefits Nov. 1.


As the Washington shutdown continues, the United States Department of Agriculture has informed the public in politicized language on its website that currently there would be no SNAP benefits issued Nov. 1. Crosslines Ministry in Lebanon is one food pantry preparing for an increased number of customers in November.


“Our single moms, single dads, people who just quite are living paycheck to paycheck and not quite making it, I’m expecting them to now need our resources,” Director Melissa Blankenship said.
