NORMA J. HARTMAN

Norma J. Hartman, 90, of Springfield, formerly of Lebanon, died Friday, Sept. 16, 2022, following a lengthy illness.

She was born May 17, 1932, in Lebanon, Mo. to Earl and Etta Coffman of Lebanon.

Norma married Dr. John J. Hartman, Professor Emeritus and long-time chair of the Sociology Department at WSU.

She was preceded in death by her husband of almost 60 years, John J. and her parents, Etta and Earl Coffman.

As a 1950 graduate of Lebanon High School she maintained close-knit bonds over the years with others in her class. Norma was active in professional and philanthropic organizations including the WSU Women’s Association, formerly the WSU Dames, of Wichita State University (WSU). For almost 50 years, she was a member of the Philanthropic Educational Organization (P.E.O. Sisterhood), a women’s philanthropic organization which provides educational opportunities, grants, loans and scholarships to women for their college education. Following the retirement of her husband, she established and funded the John J. Hartman Endowed Scholarship for promising students in the field of Sociology at WSU.

She is survived by two brothers-in-law, Fred E. Hartman and Charles K. Crawford ; nine special nieces and nephews and several nieces and nephews.

Visitation will be held at 11 a.m. Friday, Sept. 30, 2022 with funeral services to follow at 11:30 a.m. at Gorman-Scharpf Funeral Home in Springfield. Burial will be private in Missouri Veterans Cemetery. Donations may be made to the Dr. John J. Hartman Scholarship Fund c/o WSU Foundation, 1845 Fairmount Street, Wichita, Kan. 67260.
