Library to give away copies of ‘Diary of a Young Girl’

Since 2007, the Lebanon-Laclede County Library has given out hundreds of books in the memory of a former Laclede County resident.

On Tuesday, Sept. 8, the library is hosting the annual Myrtle McCracken Lillard Book-Give-Away. This year Friends of the Library will be handing out copies of “The Diary of a Young Girl” by Anne Frank.

“This year’s selection of ‘Diary of a Young Girl’ spoke to the staff,” said Lebanon-Laclede County Library Director Cathy Dame.

“Diary of a Young Girl” is put together from Anne Frank’s personal diary that she wrote while hiding in an attic during Nazi occupation of the Netherlands. Frank and her family were eventually apprehended by Nazis and taken to a concentration camp, where she died. Frank’s diary was published following the end of World War II, and shed light on the plight of Jewish people in Europe during the war.

In conjunction with the giveaway, library employees Heath Jackson and Mark Spangler created a display outside the library’s doors, showcasing the book and its author.

“Their goal was to remind readers that Anne Frank was a real person, a real young girl. I think the family photos included in the display illustrate what was important to her,” Dame said.
