Lebanon schools to close in response to coronavirus concerns

Posted
The Lebanon R-3 School District announced Monday that its schools will close Tuesday through March 27 because of concerns about the coronavirus. This time period includes the already scheduled spring break March 23-27. Superintendent Dr. David Schmitz informed parents of the decision in a letter released Monday morning. “There is no higher priority for our entire Lebanon School District family than the safety of our students, staff and community,” Schmitz wrote. “As our local, national, and international communities continue to assess the spread of COVID-19 (Coronavirus), the Lebanon School District receives ongoing guidance from the local and state health departments, the State Department of Education, and the CDC.” He said that during spring break school officials will assess the evolving situation and make a determination about re-opening schools. All extra-curricular practices and other after school activities are canceled during this time as well. “We will not be providing instruction to students this week, but will be working with teachers to develop alternate forms of instruction. In the event of an extended closure beyond Spring Break, learning would continue for students and you would receive further communication from your child’s teacher,” Schmitz wrote. “Students will be bringing home a device and other learning materials this afternoon. Schmitz said school officials realize that closing our schools presents many hardships for the community. “Our ability to provide learning during this unprecedented time will require a close partnership between the schools and parents/guardians. Please check your email regularly and be in contact with your child’s teachers,” he said The Lebanon School District will continue to work with local and state agencies to develop plans to maintain the critical support our schools provide to students and families. A plan for food distribution will be announced as soon as it is established. Updates and information will be communicated by the District by SchoolMessenger notifications, social media sites, and the website, lebanonr3.org.
