All week, through various news outlets, many have seen the hype around the Kickapoo football program after the Chiefs defeated the state-ranked Camdenton Lakers by a score of 28-7 in week one.
This week, Kickapoo showed that there were no reasons to stop believing in them yet, as the Chiefs defeated the Lebanon Yellowjackets on senior night, 30-26.
“No disrespect to Kickapoo because I thought they had a great plan because I thought coach Thomas and his kids had a great plan and played phenomenally,” head coach Will Christian said. “However, we walk away from tonight, thinking we are just as good of a football team and thinking we could have won that game.
“When you don’t play clean, that is disappointing, but the things we did learn from our team will be very valuable.”
Despite a 30-6 lead for Kickapoo at a point in the contest, Lebanon crawled back and had a chance to win the game, down 30-26 as senior quarterback Drew McBride needed to lead the ‘Jackets down the field 99-yards after the Chiefs pinned Lebanon at their own one-yard line with 2:08 remaining in the game after an outstanding punt.
LHS was able to recover a fumbled kickoff from Kickapoo after a score from senior fullback Antonio Rogers to make it 30-26 with 6:11 left to shift momentum towards Lebanon. With .6 seconds remaining, McBride’s final heave to the end zone from 10-yards away fell out of the hands of senior Cordell Zebel to fall just short of the comeback.
