Janice “Jan” Sue Miller, 78, of Sandwich, MA, passed away on Tuesday, September 11, 2024, at Cape Cod Hospital. She was the beloved wife of Martin M. “Dean” Miller, who predeceased her on August 23, 2024. Their 61-year marriage was marked by profound love and devotion. Jan’s passing came shortly after Dean’s, reflecting the deep bond they shared.
Janice, the youngest child of the late Bertha (Chastain) and Pink Elam, was born in Lebanon, Missouri, where she lived until she and Dean moved to Cape Cod to be closer to their only son, John, his wife Laurie, and their two granddaughters, Emily and Abigail, of East Sandwich. Janice loved living on the Cape and developed many new friendships through their church, Christ Chapel.
While in Lebanon, Mrs. Miller served as the principal’s assistant at Mark Twain Elementary School for over 25 years. She had a passion for singing, playing the piano, sewing, cooking, and especially baking. Her greatest joy was spending time with Dean and their family, including their two granddaughters, who brought them immense joy. Jan and Dean were devout Christians and deeply valued family traditions. Over the years, she was the pianist for both Second Baptist Church and First Free Will Baptist Church. Additionally, she sang in the choir and performed as part of a trio, traveling around Lebanon.
She is survived by her son, John, his wife, Laurie, and their daughters, Emily and Abigail. She is also survived by many nieces, nephews, and cherished friends from Lebanon with whom she maintained close relationships, even after moving to the Cape.
A funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. on Tuesday, September 17, 2024, at Christ Chapel, 1200 Old Stage Road, Centerville, MA. The burial will follow at the Massachusetts National Cemetery. Arrangements are being handled by Nickerson-Bourne Funeral Home, 154 Route 6A, Sandwich, MA.
