Larry Krudwig recalls a Lebanon in the late 1950s and early 1960s filled with malt shops, classic cars, rock ’n’ roll on the radio and kids cruising the main street.
Many of those things are now a distant memory, but the Model A Ford he drove to high school has remained a constant presence in Krudwig’s life for nearly 60 years.
He still has the car he purchased as a high school student and in recent years has restored the vehicle to its former glory.
Krudwig said life in Lebanon at that time for teenagers recalled the movie “American Graffitti.”
“I’ve watched that movie several times and I’ve said, ‘Gee, that’s just like in Lebanon, the main street they used to drive was Commercial street, that was called dragging Main,” he said.
The main attractions included Verne’s Malt Shop and the Triangle Drive-in.
“The whole point was to take cars and drag Main, then go out to the Triangle Drive In, go to wherever, not a whole lot unlike what you saw in that movie and the same time period.”
Hot rods were a big part of the scene, he said.
