Eighth graders from Cross Christian were present at Monday’s Optimist Club meeting to present on their school with the help of middle school teacher Derek Yarber. The presentation began with photos that illustrated the more light-hearted elements of the school, such as incentive treats and fellowship opportunities.
Yarber explained that the school, formerly known as Tri-County Christian School, began in 2016 at the Sleeper Methodist Church as a kindergarten, first grade and second grade school. The school now educates up to the high school level and has had two graduating classes thus far.
The school currently has 40 staff members and 200 students in two locations. Core classes and homeroom classes for the younger ages are limited to 15 students.
Groups of students presented on several topics, one of which was academics. Students described their education as collaborative and hands on. One student gave the example of calculating the distance between the school and a nearby gas station by walking to it.
In sports, students spoke about the school’s archery, basketball, and golf clubs, with track and volleyball teams planned in the future. One of the students noted the balance between spirituality and athletics in their sports. Yarber noted the sports are mainly for middle schoolers now and function as clubs.
In student life, students attested to attending events like cookouts, nursing home caroling, and youth-group activities aimed at creating fellowship. Yarber said that while some youth events split up boys and girls, the students are usually together.
