Commercial surcharge tax

Proposed levy change could hit November ballot

Posted
A proposal to reduce Laclede County’s commercial property surcharge tax led to a lengthy discussion at Tuesday’s Laclede County Commission meeting. The Commission is scheduled to decide whether to set a November vote on the tax, which affects local business and industry, at next Tuesday’s meeting. The commission is proposing a ballot issue that would ask voters to reduce the tax from $1.03 per $100 assessed valuation to .51 per $100 assessed valuation.  At Tuesday’s meeting, representatives of the school and library said reducing the tax would harm their ability to provide education services at the current level.
