Betty Jane Shelton, 83, of Crocker, died Wednesday, April 7, 2021, in Jefferson City’
She was born Dec. 23, 1937, in Richland, Mo. to August Francis and Nova Lois (Kissinger) Peterson.
On May 1, 1955, she married Lester Lee Shelton.
She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband Leslie Lee Shelton, who died on Dec. 8, 2020, and by a sister, Evelyn Jones and by two infant brothers.
Betty graduated from Crocker High School as Salutatorian of the Class of 1955. She was employed through the years at H.D. Lee, International Shoe Factory and secretary of Swedeborg School District. Betty also served as secretary of the St. John-Swede Cemetery for many years. She was also a devoted homemaker and provided a warm and loving home for her family.
She was a longtime, faithful and active member of Swedeborg Christian Church. Her church family was very important to her.
Survivors include her son, Darrel Shelton of Waynesville; three daughters, Barbara Stewart and her husband Stan of Heath, Texas, Brenda York and her husband Randy of Richland, MO and Julie Whittle and her husband Gene of Crocker; six grandchildren, Bethany McMahan, Karson York, Rachel Alana Newman, Dalton Whittle, Luke Stewart and Fawn Whittle; five great-grandchildren, Courtney and Sydney McMahan, Emmi, Sean and Visa Newman; other relatives and a host of dear friends.
Funeral services for Betty Jane Shelton will be held at 2 p.m. Monday, April 12, 2021, at Swedeborg Christian Church with Doug Jacobson officiating. Burial will be in St. John-Swede Cemetery near Richland, under the direction of Shadel’s Colonial Chapel of Lebanon. Visitation will be from 3-5 p.m. Sunday, April 11, at Shadel’s Colonial Chapel in Lebanon. Under the guidelines of the state of Missouri, the staff of Shadel’s Colonial ask that you observe social distancing and proper hygiene. The family asks for their safety and the safety of others, that masks be worn. Those guidelines will be monitored during this time to accommodate the family and their wishes.
