14 'Jacket wrestlers advance to second round

Posted

COLUMBIA — As of press time on Friday, 14 out of 17 Lebanon High School wrestlers remained alive in the Missouri Class 3 and Girls’ Wrestling Championships in Columbia. This means that 14 wrestlers either advanced to the Quarterfinals or won their first round of wrestlebacks on the left side of the bracket.

Although there was supposed to be 18 total wrestlers, LHS found out on Tuesday that they had lost former State champion Quincey Glendenning for the year after a significant knee injury that she sustained during Monday’s girls’ basketball game against the Parkview Vikings.
“We lost her, and that is a big hit because that is a lot of team points,” head coach Randy Roark said. “She can’t be scared not to do something because she is afraid of getting hurt, so it is what it is with the injury.”

After the first day and at press time, the girls’ currently are tied for 8th place with a score of 22 points, while the boys’ team was in first in Class 3 with a score of 33.5, 1.5 points ahead of second-place Kearney.
“I thought the boys wrestled well (on day one),” Roark said. “We had a lot of matches that could’ve gone either way and won a few of those and lost a few. We had a couple of guys run into buzz saws in their first matches, but was glad to see them bounce back in wrestlebacks.”

On the girls’ side, Dream Cunningham advanced to the semifinals after a quarterfinals win over Cierra Miller of Park Hill. Freshman Bailey Joiner won her first-round match after being down a majority of the match but got pinned in the quarterfinals against Maria Slaughter of Holt.
“I think heart won her (Joiner) that first match,” Roark said. “She stayed in it and was down the majority of the match, she fought off her back a few times and ended up pinning the girl for big team points.”
