Cashawn Ward Williams allegedly shot and killed Gary Don Peterson after getting into a verbal altercation with the victim about a woman.

Williams, 39, of Lebanon, faces criminal charges of class A felony murder and armed criminal action in connection to the death of Peterson, 47, of Lebanon, on Tuesday night. As of Wednesday afternoon, Williams was still at large.

According to court documents released Wednesday, Williams had picked up a woman at her work and brought her to her home in the 400 block  of Miller Street. The two were “hanging out” at the woman’s house. The Lebanon Police Department could not confirm whether Williams and the woman were a couple, but Spokesperson Sgt. Kacie Springer did say that Williams and the woman do have a child together.

The woman’s sister told a police detective that she saw her sister walking outside with Peterson. Williams approached them and asked, “What is going on between you and Gary?” According to the witness, Williams had accused the woman in the past of having sex with Peterson.

The witness told police that the “next thing (she) remembers is” seeing Williams pull up his shirt, pulling a gun from his waist band and pointing it at Peterson.

The witness yelled for two children who were outside to get into the house. She reported hearing the first gunshot right after she had gotten the children inside. A second shot was fired while they were inside, according to the documents.

Shortly after the shooting, Williams fled the scene. As soon as she knew he was gone, the witness said she took the children and left.

Other witnesses confirmed that Williams allegedly walked up to Peterson and shot him in the middle of the road with a handgun. One witness told the police that after the first shot, Williams walked away but then turned around and shot Peterson in the head. Williams then got into a car and drove away, court documents state.

Police arrived at the scene at about 5:06 p.m. Attempts were made to revive Peterson, but he was later pronounced dead at the scene by the Laclede County Coroner’s office.

Officers later executed a search warrant at Williams’ home, where the vehicle he fled in was discovered. During the search, officers located the box for a .40-caliber handgun and .40-caliber ammunition. Officers had also been able to find .40-caliber shell casings at the scene of the murder, according to the probable cause statement.
