Julie Rayl-Gilstrap was sworn in Thursday as Laclede County’s new assessor.

She had previously served as deputy under longtime Assessor Johnny North who retired after serving for nearly 30 years in the position.

Laclede County Clerk Glenda Mott administered the oath of office in the front lobby of the courthouse.

By state statute, the assessor is elected in November, but does not take office until the first day of September.  Rayl-Gilstrap served as a deputy under North before taking office.

“I’ve been working there for so many years, I just continued to work,” she said. “Johnny has really helped me with the transition, allowing me to take a lot more responsibility on and I’ve got a great staff.”

She said the office’s staff will remain the same.
