When Missourians passed Amendment 2 by 65.5 percent last November, they may have envisioned medical marijuana stores opening their doors on January 1.
However, the wait for medical marijuana will be a long one. Missouri’s Department of Health and Senior Services estimates medical marijuana will not be available until January 2020.
According to its website, the DHSS will not begin accepting applications for the “cultivation, manufacturing, and dispensing facilities” until August 3, 2019. It is not a timeline over which the DHSS has much control.
“Building this program is a very complex process, and it takes time to make sure we do it right for Missourians, but much of the timeline that we are working with was created by lawmakers and was written into the Constitution,” said Lisa Cox, chief of the Office of Public Information for the Missouri DHSS.
