Longtime County Treasurer Jean Cook is retiring after serving the county for more than 30 years.
“I never dreamed I’d run for office when I first started to work here 36 years ago,” Jean Cook characterized her first days, working at the Laclede County Courthouse, as assistant county treasurer to then County Treasurer Agnes Core in January 1983.
“Agnes was looking for an assistant treasurer as the previous treasurer, an older man, had had a stroke and before that, he had not been doing well apparently. Agnes told me to come to work and wear my blue jeans as we had a lot of cleaning up to do.” She laughed, remembering those early days. “I started out as part-time but after a year, the job changed to full time as I was also the county purchasing agent and the mail clerk."
