Tom Holland is the definitive wall-crawling superhero in ‘Homecoming’

I’ll always have a soft spot in my heart for Tobey Maguire’s take on the wall-crawling superhero, but let’s face it, he was much better as the nerdy Peter Parker than the wise-cracking hero. A few years later, along came Andrew Garfield, who absolutely nailed Spider-Man but wasn’t quite as convincing as his alter ego.

Fortunately for the old web head, the third time is the charm. Young Tom Holland (a relatively unknown actor until last year’s cameo in “Captain America: Civil War”) completely embodies the character created by Stan Lee and Steve Ditko half a century ago. Holland is painfully nerdy as Parker and overly confident when he pulls on the red and blue tights. He is the Spider-Man that I always envisioned as a kid reading those old comic books.

This isn’t to say that “Spider-Man: Homecoming” is the best Spider-Man film out there. In the past 15 years, we’ve gotten six films starring the friendly neighborhood hero. There’s been some major ups and downs in those years, but I still stick to my stance that Sam Raimi’s “Spider-Man 2,” which is something of a standard bearer in the world of superhero film. Don’t get me wrong, “Homecoming” is great. It has great actors, a tight script and that Marvel movie charm, but it’s missing the heart that made “Spider-Man 2” the classic that it is. But, you never know, that could be something that this new series is building toward.
