C.P. Craig has left the building.

Shortly after receiving Tuesday's recall election results, Craig met Interim City Administrator Chris Heard and cleaned out his office at City Hall.

Immediately after the final election results were posted just before 8 p.m. at the Laclede County Clerk's Office, Sherman Davis, chairman of the Committee to Retain Mayor C.P. Craig, was on his cell phone to Craig.

"You're no longer mayor ... The people have spoken," Davis said. (See related article, this edition.)

In an e-mail to city council members, Heard reported that Craig came to city hall at about 8:30 p.m.

"I oversaw this, and I am in receipt of his keys and pass cards," Heard wrote.

Craig also turned in his laptop computer, which Heard said was not at his home.

Craig later sent an e-mail to all city staff and a separate e-mail to council members.

The e-mail to employees began, "As one of the last acts as your mayor ..."

He thanked employees for their "hard work, dedication and loyalty to the citizens of Lebanon." He commented on the growth of their "capabilities and development of higher standards and levels of performance and professionalism," and said he hoped he had a hand in that, then wished them continued growth both personally and professionally.

In the e-mail to the council, which Heard would not release because it contained a reference to the ongoing lawsuit with Public Water Supply District No. 3, Craig urged the council to proceed with caution.

Craig "respectfully" urged them to seek legal counsel in the matter of Ward 4 Robert Finley's move to Ward 1 and also in appointing a new mayor.

He also thanked council members for the work they have done for the city.
